A few notes:

When I arrived late night in November 2011 from Dover AFB, Delaware, helpful Greyhound bus station personnel pointed me to the Metro station just up some steps from the Greyhound DC terminal. Very convenient. When I got there, the lady in the booth helped me every way possible to get to Andrews AFB, from where I needed to return to Travis AFB, CA.

This time I arrived at Andrews AFB and intended to go into town. That required a Metro bus from the maingate to the Suitland Metro rail station. The weekend Green Line station attendant was pretty helpful and I managed to figure out the rest. There is a table across the top, where all of the stations are named and the prices are listed. I looked up Smithonian, and the attendant told me that I had to transfer at L'Enfant Plaza and then it was a single stop on either the Orange or Blue line to the Smithonian.

NOTE: When I used my newfound knowledge and programmed a ticket with enough money to return to Suitland (i.e. a roundtrip ticket), and arrived on a Tuesday late afternoon back at the Suitland station, the system would not let me exit. The local attendant (who seemed to have forgotten who pays his salary) only yelled at me, and finally two kind black ladies walked me through the process of adding money back to the system and to my ticket to let me exit.

What I learned was:

1. Prices change, depending on weekday or weekend and time of day, e.g. rush-hour.

2. Have correct change on the Metro bus, they will not return change.
